Ministry of Education Releases Grade 10 School Selection Schedule for 2026

The Ministry of Education has announced the dates when Grade 9 learners will choose their senior schools, career pathways and subject combinations before joining Grade 10.
According to the ministry, the selection exercise will start on August 24, 2026, and end on September 11, 2026.
Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa has directed education officers across the country to supervise the exercise and ensure it is carried out smoothly.
The selection process is important because it will determine where learners will study and the pathway they will follow when they join senior school in 2027 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Before the exercise begins, the Ministry of Education will train education officials and school heads through virtual meetings between August 3 and August 11.
Some of the key activities include:
- August 3: Virtual meeting for Sub-County Directors of Education and Quality Assurance officers.
- August 4–6: Education officers will update Grade 10 school capacities in the ministry’s system.
- August 6–8: Senior school principals will enter available pathways and subject combinations.
- August 6: Regional and County education officials will also attend a virtual training session.
- August 7–11: Junior school headteachers will receive training to prepare for the nationwide exercise.
The Ministry has asked all education officers and school heads to attend the scheduled training sessions to ensure the Grade 10 selection process is completed successfully.
The exercise is part of the government’s plan to prepare Grade 9 learners for their transition to senior school after completing the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).
