Climax Coaches Explain What Really Happened in Crash That Killed Cyrus Jirongo

Climax Coaches has broken its silence following the tragic road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

The accident happened on December 13 along the Nairobi–Naivasha highway, involving a Climax Coaches bus and a private vehicle in which Jirongo was travelling.

Why the Bus Was Still Near Naivasha at 3am

The crash raised questions online after many Kenyans wondered why the bus, which was heading to Busia, was still near Naivasha in the early morning hours.

In a statement, Climax Coaches explained that the bus, registration number KCU 576A, left the Muthurwa Railways terminal at around 10pm. It then made several stops within Nairobi to pick passengers before heading toward Western Kenya.

The bus reportedly stopped in Kibera, Darajani, Kawangware, Kangemi, and Gitaru, collecting passengers at each location before joining the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.

Passenger Numbers Explained

According to the company, the bus was carrying 51 passengers at the time of the accident. However, only 46 passengers were listed in the official manifest.

Climax Coaches’ lawyer, Daniel Mwangi, explained that the 46 passengers boarded from official pickup points and were properly booked, while five others joined the bus along the Nairobi–Naivasha highway and were therefore not included in the manifest.

Climax Coaches strongly dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting foul play in the accident.

The company said it has fully cooperated with the police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

According to Climax’s operations manager, investigators have treated the incident as a normal road accident, with no evidence of a conspiracy.

Driver Reported Accident at 2:36am

The company stated that it was informed of the crash by the bus driver at around 2:36am. Another Climax bus coming from Western Kenya later helped transport stranded passengers.

So far, none of the passengers who were on board at the time of the accident have publicly spoken about what happened.

Driver’s Account Differs on Passenger Numbers

In earlier reports, the bus driver claimed the bus was carrying 65 passengers, a figure that differs from the company’s official statement.

The driver said the crash occurred shortly after Jirongo’s vehicle exited a petrol station and entered the bus’s lane. He added that he tried to avoid the collision but feared the bus might overturn.

He later learned that the driver of the car involved was former MP Cyrus Jirongo after police arrived at the scene.
