EACC Arrests Govt Official, Ksh100,000 Found Hidden in Socks During Bribe Sting

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested an employee of Nakuru Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) over claims of asking for a bribe from residents seeking water services.

The suspect, who works as a leak detection officer, was arrested on Monday, March 23 after a resident from Langa Langa Estate reported him. The resident claimed the officer demanded Ksh15,000 to help replace a confiscated water meter.

EACC officers set up an operation after receiving the complaint. The suspect was caught while allegedly receiving the money.

During the arrest, detectives recovered Ksh15,000, believed to be the bribe. They also found an additional Ksh100,000 hidden in his socks and Ksh18,000 in his coat pocket. Investigators suspect the extra cash could be linked to other illegal activities.

EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud said investigations are ongoing to find out if more people or transactions are connected to the case.

The suspect was taken to the EACC South Rift Regional Office in Nakuru for questioning before being held at the Central Police Station.

This arrest comes shortly after another major case handled by EACC. Recently, the commission recovered Ksh10.9 million from a former Deputy Director of Health in Homa Bay County. The money was said to be salaries earned illegally.

In that case, Benjamin Musyoki, a judge at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, ordered Walter Odhiambo to return all the money he received between June 2016 and August 2021. The court found that he was working for two government institutions at the same time, which is against the law.

EACC has warned that corruption among public officials remains a serious issue, noting that more arrests could follow as investigations continue across the country.
