EACC Arrests Murang’a Traffic Officer With Sh6,450 Suspected Bribe Money

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a traffic police officer in Murang’a town over claims of taking bribes from motorists.

The officer, identified as Police Constable Kelvin Mwangi, is attached to Murang’a Traffic Base. He was arrested after EACC detectives carried out a special surveillance operation along the busy Kenol–Murang’a Road.

According to EACC, the operation followed numerous complaints from members of the public who accused traffic officers of openly demanding bribes along the highway.

During the arrest, detectives searched the officer and recovered Sh6,450 in cash, mainly in Sh50, Sh100 and Sh200 notes. Investigators believe the money was collected from motorists within just two hours.

EACC said the officer’s colleague, PC Mathew Osike, escaped arrest after spotting the detectives during the operation.

The arrested officer was taken to the EACC Central Regional Offices for questioning before being booked at Nyeri Police Station. He was later released on cash bail as investigations continue.

In the same operation, EACC officers disrupted another suspected bribery point along the Kerugoya–Kutus Road near Bekam area.

Traffic officers manning the spot reportedly fled into nearby bushes, abandoning their official police uniforms at the scene.

Similar Arrest in Mtwapa

The Murang’a arrest comes barely a day after another traffic officer was arrested in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, over similar bribery allegations.

The officer, Mazera Haron, was arrested after several days of surveillance along the Mtwapa–Malindi Road.

He was found with Sh13,750, all in Sh100 notes, which EACC suspects to be proceeds of bribery.

EACC has warned traffic officers involved in corruption that crackdowns will continue as the commission responds to public complaints across the country.
