Easy Guide on How to File KRA Returns Using WhatsApp in 2026

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new WhatsApp chatbot, Shuru, to make filing tax returns easier for Kenyans.

The service allows taxpayers to file their returns directly via WhatsApp without visiting the iTax portal. Apart from filing returns, users can also check their KRA PIN details, access eTIMS services, generate tax invoices, pay taxes, and even speak to a KRA agent.

Step 1: Save KRA’s Official WhatsApp Number

To get started, save the official KRA WhatsApp number 0711 099 999 on your phone.

Open WhatsApp and start a conversation with the number. This will connect you to the Shuru chatbot.

Step 2: Start the Chat

Send a message such as “Hi” or “Hello”.

The chatbot will display several options, including:

  • Filing tax returns
  • Checking KRA PIN details
  • Applying for a Tax Compliance Certificate
  • Accessing eTIMS services
  • Speaking to a KRA agent

Choose the option for filing tax returns.

Step 3: Verify Your Details

The system will ask you to provide your National ID number and KRA PIN.

After submitting the details, an OTP code will be sent to your registered phone number. Enter the code on WhatsApp to complete the verification process.

Step 4: View Your Pre-filled Tax Information

Once your identity has been confirmed, the chatbot will display your pre-filled tax return information.

Some of the information that may already be available includes:

  • Employment income
  • Employer details
  • Tax deductions

This reduces the need to enter everything manually.

Step 5: Confirm the Information

Go through the details carefully and make sure everything is correct.

The WhatsApp service has been designed to guide users through the entire process, making it easier for first-time filers.

Step 6: Complete and Submit Your Returns

Follow the instructions provided by the chatbot to finish filing your returns.

KRA reminds taxpayers that the deadline for filing annual tax returns is June 30.

KRA Gives Relief on Non-eTIMS Expenses

Meanwhile, KRA has announced that Kenyans filing their 2025 tax returns can still declare expenses that do not have eTIMS receipts.

Taxpayers with non-compliant receipts can upload them manually through the iTax portal under the section for manual and non-eTIMS invoices.

The move is expected to benefit businesses, consultants and freelancers who incurred expenses in 2025 without obtaining eTIMS receipts.
