Germany Announces Fully Funded Scholarships for Kenyans with Ksh149,000 Monthly Stipend

The German government has announced a new scholarship opportunity for Kenyan graduates who wish to pursue master’s studies in Germany.

The scholarships are offered through the Helmut-Schmidt Programme, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Successful applicants will receive full financial support, including a monthly allowance of about Ksh149,000.

The programme is designed for graduates who want to build careers in public policy, governance, development, and leadership. It aims to equip future leaders with skills that can help improve governance and social development in their home countries.

Who Can Apply?

The scholarship is open to graduates from developing countries, including Kenya. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree and demonstrated strong academic performance.

Applicants should also demonstrate a commitment to contributing to their country’s development after completing their studies.

Work experience such as internships, community service, volunteering, or professional employment will be an added advantage.

Benefits of the Scholarship

Successful candidates will receive:

  • Monthly stipend of €992 (about Ksh149,000)
  • Full health insurance cover in Germany
  • Travel allowance
  • Research and study support
  • Accommodation assistance
  • Possible family allowances for eligible students

Students will also attend a German language course before beginning their master’s programmes.

The scholarship covers several master’s courses offered by different universities in Germany, including:

  • Management in Nonprofit Organisations

  • Governance and Public Policy

All programmes are taught in English and provide students with international exposure and networking opportunities.

Documents Required

Applicants will need to submit:

  • DAAD application form
  • Motivation letter
  • Updated CV
  • Academic certificates and transcripts
  • Proof of work experience or community involvement
  • English language proficiency documents
  • Recommendation letter from an employer or lecturer

Certified translations must accompany any documents not written in English or German.

How to Apply

Applicants can apply for up to two master’s programmes under the scholarship scheme.

Applications must be submitted directly to the selected universities together with all supporting documents.

The application period runs from June 1, 2026, to July 31, 2026.

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed by university professors and DAAD representatives later in the year.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to upload additional documents through the DAAD portal before final selections are made.

Applicants are advised to ensure all documents are complete and submitted before the deadline, as incomplete applications will not be considered.
