Govt to Recruit 50,000 Police Officers and Teachers in Major Hiring Plan
2 min read
The government has unveiled plans to hire close to 50,000 new police officers and teachers beginning this year, citing improved economic stability and stronger fiscal management since the current administration took office.
Details of the recruitment drive are contained in the 2026/27 Budget Policy Statement (BPS), which has already been tabled in Parliament for review and approval. According to the policy document, 20,000 police officers will be recruited to strengthen national security as the country prepares for the 2027 General Elections.
Boost for National Security
The Budget Policy Statement outlines a major investment in the security sector, with a focus on modernising police operations. Key areas set to benefit include:
-
Intelligence gathering
-
Community policing
-
Border surveillance and management
-
Counter-insurgency operations
-
Forensic investigations
The recruitment of the 20,000 officers will be supported by the purchase of modern equipment and patrol vehicles. The government also plans to improve police housing, medical coverage, and overall welfare for officers.
In addition, resources will be directed towards restorative justice programmes, vocational training for inmates, psychosocial support services, and other community-based initiatives aimed at strengthening the justice system.
Improved Police-to-Citizen Ratio
Between 2022 and 2025, police recruitment efforts reduced the police-to-citizen ratio from 1:1,150 to 1:800. The government attributes this progress to continuous training in modern investigative techniques, human rights standards, community policing strategies, and cybercrime prevention.
The security sector budget is projected at Ksh329.9 billion for the 2026/27 financial year. This allocation is expected to rise to Ksh339.3 billion in 2027/28 and Ksh344.9 billion in 2028/29.
30,000 Teachers to Be Hired
In the education sector, the government plans to recruit 30,000 teachers in a move aimed at improving teacher-to-learner ratios and enhancing the quality of education nationwide.
The recruitment process will be overseen by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), with special focus placed on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, as well as technical and vocational areas.
To support this expansion, the education sector is expected to receive Ksh380 billion in the 2026/27 financial year. The allocation is projected to increase to Ksh441.8 billion in 2027/28 and Ksh459.3 billion in 2028/29.
Classroom Expansion Under CBE
Alongside teacher recruitment, the government plans to construct 20,000 new classrooms and renovate 15,000 existing ones. This is part of preparations for the continued rollout of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, especially for learners transitioning from Grade 9.
The combined recruitment of police officers and teachers signals one of the largest public sector hiring plans in recent years, aimed at strengthening security, improving education standards, and supporting national development goals.
