HELB Lists Requirements for Students Ahead of July Loan Application Portal Opening

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has advised students planning to apply for loans for the first time to prepare all the required documents before the application portal opens.

In a notice issued on June 16, HELB said early preparation will help students avoid delays and challenges when the application process begins.

The board encouraged applicants to follow its official communication channels for updates on the opening date of the portal.

Documents Required for First-Time HELB Applicants

Students applying for a HELB loan for the first time are required to have the following information and documents ready:

  • A valid email address and mobile phone number.
  • KCPE and KCSE index numbers and the year they sat the exams.
  • A passport-size photo in JPG, JPEG or PNG format.
  • A copy of the National ID or Maisha Card showing both sides.
  • Valid bank account details or an M-Pesa number registered under the applicant’s ID.
  • A birth certificate in PDF format for applicants below 18 years.
  • A sponsorship letter in PDF format for students who were sponsored in secondary school.

Parent and Guarantor Details Needed

Applicants will also be required to provide:

  • Parent’s National ID number and registered mobile number.
  • A copy of the parent’s death certificate in PDF format if the parent is deceased.
  • Details of two guarantors, including their ID numbers and registered phone numbers. Parents can also serve as guarantors.

HELB Funding Applications Expected After KUCCPS Placement

Meanwhile, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Wahome has said students who have already received messages confirming they secured one of their preferred courses should wait for another message showing the institutions where they have been placed.

According to Wahome, the detailed placement results are expected in July after verification and approval by the Ministry of Education.

She noted that successful students will be able to log into their university portals and download admission letters within two days after receiving placement details.

Wahome also urged students to provide accurate personal and household information during the funding application process, saying the details will determine the amount of financial support they qualify for under the government’s funding model.
