Kenyans to Start Weekend Early as Friday Declared Public Holiday

The Kenyan government has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, a public holiday to mark the celebration of Idd-ul-Fitr.

The announcement was made through a gazette notice issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. In the notice released on March 18, Murkomen confirmed that the day will be set aside for Muslims across the country to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

According to the statement, the decision was made under the Public Holidays Act, which gives the Interior Ministry the power to declare national holidays.

Idd-ul-Fitr, often called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is an important celebration for Muslims around the world. It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period when believers fast from dawn to sunset. The day is usually observed with special prayers, family gatherings, sharing meals, and helping those in need.

One of the key practices during this time is giving charity, known as Zakat al-Fitr, where Muslims support less fortunate members of society.

In Kenya, both public servants and workers in non-essential sectors are allowed to take the day off to celebrate.

Another major Islamic holiday, Eid al-Adha, is also recognized in Kenya as a public holiday. This festival comes later in the year and is known as the “Festival of Sacrifice.” It remembers the faith and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son as an act of devotion to God.

The authority to declare such holidays in Kenya lies with the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, as outlined in the law.
