Planned Maintenance to Affect Water Supply
Thousands of residents, businesses, and industries in Nairobi will experience water supply interruptions for nearly one week due to planned maintenance works on the city’s main water system.
The disruption has been announced by the Athi Water Works Development Agency, which is carrying out critical works on the Northern Collector Tunnel 1 system.
The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company confirmed that the water supply will be shut down for five days to allow for important operational upgrades.
Shutdown Schedule and Purpose
The shutdown will begin at 6:00 am on Monday, April 6, 2026, and end at 6:00 am on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
According to the utility company, the exercise is necessary to complete the connection of the Kigoro Water Treatment Plant to the Gigiri and Kabete reservoirs. The project is expected to improve long-term water supply reliability in Nairobi.
Areas to Be Affected
Several estates across Nairobi will be affected by the interruption. In Westlands, Lavington, and Kileleshwa, areas such as Riverside, Parklands, Chalbi Drive, Gitanga Road, Mbaazi, and Kandara Road will experience shortages.
In Kilimani, Hurlingham, and Upper Hill, affected areas include Argwings Kodhek Road, Rose Avenue, Daystar University surroundings, Kenyatta National Hospital, and KEMRI offices.
Residents in Dagoretti, Kikuyu, Uthiru, Waithaka, Kibera, Madaraka, Langata, Karen, Eastlands, and other surrounding estates will also experience water disruptions.
The Central Business District, Industrial Area, South B, South C, as well as major facilities such as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, SGR terminal, and industries along Mombasa Road will also be affected.
Public Advisory
Residents have been urged to store enough water in advance and use it sparingly during the maintenance period. The water company also apologized for the inconvenience and assured the public that the supply would be restored gradually after completion of the works.
