Clinton Nyapara Mogesa, a 28-year-old Kenyan national who joined the Russian army, was killed during fighting in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence reported that Mogesa’s body was found at a position previously held by Russian forces during an assault operation in Donetsk. The agency confirmed that he was born in 1997 and was a citizen of Kenya.
Before joining the Russian military, Mogesa had been living and working in Qatar. Reports indicate that he later signed a contract with the Russian armed forces and was deployed to one of Russia’s assault units on the front line.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russian forces did not evacuate his body after the battle. They also claimed that Mogesa’s family has not received any compensation or official explanation from the Russian authorities regarding his death.

During the operation, intelligence officers reportedly discovered passports belonging to two other Kenyan citizens on Mogesa’s body. The documents are believed to belong to individuals who may have been recruited and prepared for future combat missions.
Ukraine has also issued a warning to foreign nationals, urging them to avoid traveling to Russia or accepting job offers linked to the military.
The intelligence agency cautioned that many foreigners risk being sent to dangerous assault units with little or no training, greatly reducing their chances of survival.
Mogesa’s death comes just weeks after another Kenyan, Martin Mburu, was killed while fighting for Russia. Mburu had traveled to Russia in late 2025 after accepting what was described as a military job offer.
Reports suggest he was later forced into active combat against Ukrainian forces. Mburu, who was from Kirinyaga County, died in battle on Thursday, November 27.
