Two Miners Die After Suffocating in Gold Mine in Migori County

Two miners have died after suffocating inside a gold mining tunnel in Migori County, police have confirmed.

The tragic incident occurred on February 5, 2026, at a mining site in the Masara area of Suna Sub-County. According to authorities and fellow miners, the victims entered a tunnel in search of gold deposits but were later found dead due to a lack of oxygen.

The deceased were identified as 22-year-old Ina Okuku and Vincent Owuor. Reports indicate that the two died inside the tunnel before other miners arrived at the site and discovered their bodies.

Their bodies were later retrieved and taken to a mortuary, where they are being preserved as investigations continue and autopsies are planned to establish the exact cause of death.

Officials from the county government, police, and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) have launched investigations into the incident. They are also assessing safety conditions at the mining site.

Fatal accidents in gold mining areas have become increasingly common in several counties across Kenya, including Migori, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, West Pokot, Marsabit, and Trans Mara. Many residents risk their lives in search of gold despite the dangers associated with unsafe mining practices.

Authorities have previously attempted to enforce safety regulations in the sector, including the creation of a special police unit. However, efforts have reportedly faced resistance from powerful individuals and groups controlling the mining business.
