The body of Kenyan truck driver Edwin Njuguna has arrived in Bungoma ahead of his burial, bringing deep sadness to his family, friends, and many Kenyans.

Njuguna was killed in Bunia, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), during what was his first trip to deliver goods. Reports say he was attacked shortly after sending a worrying message to his family explaining that he had faced armed men after his truck broke down in a dangerous area.

Although Congolese military officers initially rescued him from attackers, he was later left on his own, a situation that led to his death. His body was later found by fellow Kenyan truck drivers in a bushy area and had already started decomposing.

The Kenya Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association confirmed the arrival of his body in Kenya on Sunday, April 19. The body has been preserved in Bungoma as the family prepares for burial arrangements.

News of Njuguna’s death has sparked emotional reactions across the country, with many Kenyans expressing shock and sadness on social media. Some also raised concerns about the safety of truck drivers working in conflict-prone areas of eastern DRC.

Several leaders and citizens visited or reached out to the family to offer support, describing his death as tragic and calling for better protection of workers operating in such risky regions.

Other drivers have also reported challenges in DRC, including insecurity, harassment, and violence during deliveries, raising more concerns about cross-border transport safety.
