Matiang’i Addresses Possible Handshake with Ruto Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has spoken out on whether he would consider working with President William Ruto, making it clear that such a move is not in his plans.

Speaking on the matter, Matiang’i dismissed the possibility of a political handshake or alliance with the Head of State. He said joining hands with Ruto would not help him achieve his bigger political goals.

According to Matiang’i, the President has a history of falling out with people he has previously worked with, making any possible partnership difficult.

He questioned what there would be to discuss between the two leaders, saying that Ruto is already having disagreements with some of his current allies.

Matiang’i said that looking at the President’s past political relationships, working together would not make sense.

The former Interior CS also took issue with the Kenya Kwanza government over the recent fuel controversy in the country.

He accused the government of allowing cartels and private interests to control the fuel sector for the benefit of a few individuals.

According to him, such agreements with private companies have created unnecessary challenges for ordinary Kenyans.

Matiang’i stated that if he were the President, he would not allow powerful individuals and business groups to influence such an important sector.

On the 2027 General Election, Matiang’i made it clear that he is serious about running for the presidency.

He said he is fully focused on the top seat and remains confident about his chances.

This comes even as several opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa and Rigathi Gachagua, have also shown interest in the 2027 presidential race.

Matiang’i said he would not invest his time and effort in the race if he was not confident about his chances of winning.

He also expressed confidence that President William Ruto may face a difficult path to re-election.

In recent months, the political tension between Matiang’i and Ruto has continued to grow, with the two leaders often exchanging criticism through public statements.

Matiang’i also dismissed claims that he is a political project of former President Uhuru Kenyatta because of his role in the previous Jubilee administration.

He insisted that his political ambitions are his own and not linked to any individual.
