Ruto Announces Salary Increase for Workers During Labour Day Celebrations

President William Ruto has announced an increase in minimum wages for Kenyan workers during this year’s Labour Day celebrations held in Vihiga County.
Speaking during the event, the President said that general workers will get a 12 percent salary increase, while those working in the agriculture sector will receive a higher increase of 15 percent.
According to Ruto, the decision was made after workers, through the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), requested the government to review wages due to the rising cost of living.
“I am happy to announce a 12 percent increase in general wages and a 15 percent increase for agricultural workers,” the President said.
He explained that the move is meant to help workers cope with the high cost of basic needs like food, fuel, and rent.
The 12 percent increase will apply to many sectors across the country, benefiting both formal and informal workers. The 15 percent increase will mainly support those working in farming and agriculture.
COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has been pushing for higher wages, saying many workers are struggling due to the rising prices of essential goods.
However, some employers have raised concerns about the increase. They say higher wages could affect businesses, especially small companies that are still recovering from economic challenges.
Earlier, the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), through its CEO Jacqueline Mugo, said many businesses are facing pressure from high taxes and operational costs.
She noted that while workers need better pay, businesses also need support to survive.
During the celebrations, President Ruto assured workers that their rights will continue to be protected under Kenya’s labour laws.
He added that the government will work closely with COTU, FKE, and the Ministry of Labour to ensure workers are treated fairly.
The President also said Kenya is making progress in adopting international labour standards. These include agreements by the International Labour Organization aimed at protecting domestic workers and stopping violence and harassment at workplaces.
