Former Chesikaki Councillor and Mt. Elgon MP Aspirant Nathan Wasama Shot Dead by Unknown Assailants

Former Chesikaki Councillor and Mt. Elgon parliamentary aspirant Nathan Wasama Masai has reportedly been shot dead by unknown attackers at his home in Tuikut, Cheptais, Mt. Elgon Constituency, Bungoma County.

The incident happened on Thursday night, August 7, when armed men reportedly entered his home and shot him several times before escaping.

Photos circulating online appeared to show gunshot wounds on his chest. However, police had not officially confirmed the circumstances of the shooting at the time of publication.

Wasama had recently announced his intention to contest for the Mt. Elgon parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.

Wasama had survived an earlier shooting

The latest incident comes about two years after Wasama survived another attack.

In 2024, gunmen reportedly opened fire on his vehicle in the Kapcheshari area at around 7pm. Several bullets hit the rear of the vehicle, but Wasama escaped without injuries.

His latest reported shooting has therefore raised concerns among residents and political leaders in Mt. Elgon.

Who was Nathan Wasama?

Apart from politics, Wasama was known as a businessman and philanthropist. He was also actively involved in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church and community activities.

News of his reported death has caused shock among residents and leaders in the region, with calls for investigations to establish what happened and identify those behind the attack.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa was among the leaders who mourned Wasama. He condemned the killing and called on security agencies to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

Barasa also sent condolences to Wasama’s family, friends, the people of Mt. Elgon and members of the SDA Church.

Police investigation

At the time of publication, the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had not released an official statement confirming the fatal shooting or announced any arrests.

Residents will be waiting for investigators to provide more information on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the people behind the attack.
