U.S. Explains Why it Chose Kenya, Nanyuki for Ebola Facility Over Other Nations

The United States government has explained why it selected Kenya as the preferred location for a proposed Ebola quarantine facility, saying the country’s location makes it ideal for responding quickly to disease outbreaks in Africa.

Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, June 2, CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz said Kenya’s proximity to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has experienced several Ebola outbreaks in the past, played a key role in the decision.

According to Oz, having a treatment facility close to outbreak-prone regions would help medical teams respond faster and provide urgent care to patients when needed.

Need for Faster Medical Response

Oz said patients suffering from highly infectious diseases such as Ebola require immediate treatment, and transporting them over long distances could delay life-saving medical care.

He noted that medical experts prefer facilities that are located near affected areas so that patients can access treatment without unnecessary travel.

The U.S. official added that quick response is important when dealing with dangerous diseases, as delays can increase health risks and make outbreaks harder to control.

U.S. Confident of Agreement With Kenya

Oz revealed that discussions between Kenyan and U.S. officials are already underway regarding the proposed project.

He expressed confidence that both governments would eventually reach an agreement that would allow the facility to be established.

The official also pointed to Kenya’s strong partnerships with Western countries and its existing security infrastructure as some of the factors that make it a suitable location for the project.

Concerns Continue in Laikipia

Despite the U.S. government’s explanation, the proposal has faced resistance from some residents, especially in Laikipia County where the facility is expected to be located.

Many locals have raised concerns about safety and the possible risks associated with hosting a centre linked to Ebola treatment and quarantine.

The debate over the project has sparked protests in recent weeks, with tensions remaining high as discussions between Kenya and the United States continue.
