Ogamba: Schools Must Get Parents’ and Ministry Approval Before Introducing New Charges

Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba has warned school heads against introducing extra charges without following the law.

Speaking during Education Day celebrations at Mbiriri Comprehensive School in Kieni, Nyeri County, Ogamba said any new school levy must first be approved by parents and the Ministry of Education before schools can ask families to pay.

According to the CS, some school principals are already facing disciplinary action for charging parents fees that were not approved through the required process.

“If a levy has not been approved by parents and the Ministry of Education, schools should not charge it,” Ogamba said.

He reminded school administrators to follow government regulations whenever they want to introduce new charges for school projects or other activities.

Principals Face Action

The ministry has warned that school heads who continue collecting unauthorized levies risk disciplinary measures.

Ogamba said the government will continue investigating complaints from parents and take action against schools found violating the rules.

School Heads Urged to Talk to Learners

The Education CS also asked principals to strengthen communication with students to help reduce the cases of unrest that have been reported in some schools.

He said open dialogue between school management and learners can help solve problems before they become serious.

At the same event, National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Purity Ngina praised the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

She said the curriculum is helping learners develop practical skills, confidence and the ability to express themselves through activities and projects.
