Governor Gladys Wanga on Spot After County Spent KSh 500,000 on a Two-Door Pit Latrine

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has come under public scrutiny after revealing that the county government spent about KSh 500,000 to build a two-door pit latrine.

Wanga made the remarks while appearing before the Senate Public Accounts Committee, where she was responding to queries raised in the Auditor-General’s report for the 2024/25 financial year.

During the session, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna questioned the amount spent on the project, saying many Kenyans would find the cost difficult to understand.

According to documents presented before the committee, the county had a pending bill of KSh 348,954 linked to the construction of the toilet at Ngere Beach in Kaksingri West Ward.

Responding to the concerns, Wanga explained that the average cost of building a two-door pit latrine is around KSh 500,000. She said the final amount depends on factors such as the location of the project, the type of soil and excavation work required.

The governor stated that contractors may quote slightly lower amounts depending on the conditions at the site.

She also defended her administration’s spending, saying the county remains committed to accountability, transparency and proper use of public funds.

However, the revelation sparked debate among Kenyans, with some questioning whether the amount represented value for money, while others argued that construction costs can vary depending on the specifications and location of a project.
