The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned Kenyans about a falsified batch of Postinor-2 emergency contraceptive pills being sold in the country.
The affected product is Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel 0.75mg) with batch number T34197R. According to the regulator, the batch falsely indicates that it was manufactured by Gedeon Richter.
The PPB says the fake tablets may contain the wrong amount of the active ingredient, contain no active ingredient at all, or have harmful or undeclared substances. This means the medicine may fail to work as expected.
How to identify the fake Postinor-2
The regulator has identified several differences between the falsified tablets and genuine Postinor-2. These include differences in:
Batch number printing
Packaging
Carton sealing
Tablet colour
Authentication logo
Information provided in the patient leaflet
The PPB has asked pharmacies, hospitals and medicine distributors to check their stocks and quarantine any suspected falsified products.
Members of the public have also been advised to buy medicines only from PPB-licensed pharmacies and suppliers.
Two people arrested
The regulator says two people have been arrested after they were allegedly found with the falsified Postinor-2.
Investigations are ongoing to establish where the fake medicine came from, how it entered the country and how widely it has been distributed.
