Mombasa County Announces 3,000 Youth Jobs Ahead of El Niño Rains
2 min read
Mombasa County has announced plans to create 3,000 jobs for young people under the Mombasa Yangu Programme as it prepares for heavy rains expected in October.
Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said the recruitment will be done in phases, with 1,500 casual workers expected to be hired in the first phase.
Duties of the Recruited Youths
Those hired in the first phase will work under the departments of Environment and Transport.
Their duties will include:
- Clearing blocked drainage channels.
- Removing solid waste.
- Conducting environmental clean-up exercises.
- Helping reduce flooding in different parts of Mombasa.
The governor said the workers will be provided with protective gear to help keep them safe while working.
“We will employ young people in phases to help with unclogging of drainage channels and ensuring the city is floods free,” Nassir said.
County Announces Restrictions Ahead of the Rains
The county has also issued contractors with a 48-hour notice to stop mixing sand and cement on construction sites, effective Monday.
Nassir said quarry operations will be suspended once the rains begin. The county is also expected to engage the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on traffic management during the rainy season.
Beach access may also be restricted if weather conditions worsen.
Social Halls Set Aside as Flood Shelters
Mombasa County has designated social halls as temporary shelters for families who may be displaced by floods.
County Commissioner Mohamed Noor urged residents not to dump waste in drainage channels, saying the county has already identified flood-prone areas and is preparing for possible emergencies.
The announcement comes after flash floods on Friday affected more than 100 households in Jomvu, Kisauni, Changamwe and Likoni, according to the Kenya Red Cross.
The governor also urged residents to avoid sharing old flood videos as if they were current events.
How to Apply for the Mombasa Youth Jobs
The county’s Department of Environment will publish an official advertisement inviting interested youths to apply.
The application details, including the requirements, application procedure and deadline, will be provided in the official advertisement. Applicants should wait for the county’s announcement and avoid relying on unverified social media posts.
The jobs are expected to run for three months.
