Atwoli Breaks Silence on Viral Claims of Gifting Nephew Ksh8 Million Prado for KCSE Excellence

Claims that COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli gave his nephew a brand-new Toyota Prado worth Ksh8 million for outstanding KCSE results are false, Atwoli has clarified.

The rumors, which spread widely on Facebook and X on Friday, January 9, featured a photo showing Atwoli handing over car keys to a young man standing next to a Prado wrapped with a ribbon. The posts suggested that Atwoli was rewarding his relative for excelling in the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

One social media caption read:
“Francis Atwoli gifts his nephew a brand new Toyota Prado worth Ksh8 million after he posted exemplary results in his KCSE exams.”

While some online users praised the alleged gesture, others questioned the authenticity of the information and called for clarification. One user commented,
“I don’t think it’s right for wealthy individuals to give cars to their children or relatives. It would be better if they rewarded schools instead.”

In response, Atwoli dismissed the posts as fake and misleading, urging Kenyans to ignore such social media rumors.

This clarification came shortly after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba released the KCSE results, which saw over 270,000 students meet the minimum university entry grade of C+. According to Ogamba, 1,932 candidates achieved the top grade of A (plain), up from 1,693 in 2024.

Following the announcement, celebrations erupted across the country as students, parents, and teachers shared their excitement over the excellent results.

In Kenya, it is not uncommon for some politicians to publicly reward their children for exceptional national exam performances, a practice that has often sparked debate. Last year, a prominent politician reportedly gifted his son a Ksh5 million car for scoring an A plain in the 2024 KCSE, a year in which 1,693 students earned the top grade.
