Inside Kwa Uhuru: Kenyatta Family Estate Where Rent Is Just Sh 2,000 a Month
2 min read
New details have emerged about a Mabati estate in Kitengela owned by President Uhuru Kenyatta, which reportedly generates millions of shillings annually in rental income.
The estate, popularly known as “Kwa Uhuru”, is situated along Namanga Road on a large piece of land just a few kilometers from Kitengela town in Kajiado County. Originally built to house workers of Kitengela Honey Products, a Kenyatta family business that didn’t take off, the estate now accommodates a variety of tenants, mostly employed at nearby flower farms like Exotic Penina Fields and Maasai Flowers Limited.
Affordable Housing That Generates Big Money
Kwa Uhuru consists of 200 mabati housing units, with monthly rents ranging from Sh1,200 to Sh1,450 depending on the size. Each unit can house two to four tenants, which means the estate is home to over 400 residents. With rent collected by an agent on behalf of the first family, the estate reportedly brings in over Sh3 million annually.
A resident explained, “Rent is deposited to an agent account then channelled to the President’s family. Payment is strictly due by the 10th of every month.”

Life at the Estate
The houses are simple but functional, each with a small interior that fits a bed, a table, chairs, and basic cooking utensils. Many units feature front porches and space for small vegetable gardens, giving residents a sense of personal space.
Security is tight, with 24-hour guards patrolling the estate, and tenants have access to water round the clock from a borehole with two taps.
Ondieki, a tenant at the estate, said, “There is pride in living here because of who owns the place, but you can’t leave your house open. Still, compared to other shanty areas, we are far better and more organised.”
After work, many residents gather at the estate’s entrance to socialize and watch traffic along Namanga Road, reflecting a small but tight-knit community.
Kwa Uhuru remains a rare example of a well-maintained mabati estate that is both affordable for tenants and profitable for its owners, illustrating how simple housing can generate significant income while providing security and order for residents.
