K24, Standard Journalists Attacked While Covering UDA Meeting in Cherangany
2 min read
Two journalists from Standard Group PLC and Mediamax Network Limited were attacked while covering a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting in Cherangany on Friday, March 20, 2026.
The victims, George Njoroge and Gilbert Sitati, were reportedly assaulted by a group of goons during the political event. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of journalists in Kenya.
What Happened
According to reports, the attackers allegedly targeted the journalists over a story linking Allan Chesang to a controversial ambulance tender connected to Harambee House.
During the attack:
-
Njoroge was seriously injured and later rushed to the hospital.
-
Sitati was beaten while filming and almost lost his phone before colleagues intervened.
Videos shared online show one of the attackers violently assaulting a journalist as he begged for mercy.
The incident is believed to be connected to an investigative report aired by KTN News and published by The Standard. The report, titled “The Masterminds of the Harambee House Tender Scam,” claimed there were links between the senator and individuals involved in a fake ambulance deal.
Through his lawyers, Chesang has denied the claims and issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the story be pulled down, calling it false and defamatory.
DCI Statement
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also addressed the matter, dismissing reports that officials from President William Ruto’s office were involved.
