Kenya Pipeline Company No Longer a State Entity After IPO Sale
2 min read
The National Treasury has officially removed Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) from the list of state corporations after the company’s successful privatisation.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi signed the legal notice on April 22, 2026, ending KPC’s status as a national government entity. The decision was announced through a special Gazette notice.
According to the notice, the move follows the successful sale of 65 per cent of KPC shares to the public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) at the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
This means the government is no longer the full owner of the company. After the sale, the National Treasury now remains with a 35 per cent stake in KPC, while ordinary Kenyans and institutional investors now own the majority shares.

Trading of KPC shares officially started at the NSE on March 10, 2026, opening a new chapter for one of Kenya’s key fuel transport companies.
KPC has for many years played an important role in transporting petroleum products across Kenya and other East African countries through its pipeline network.
Before the listing, the company changed from a private limited company to a Public Limited Company (PLC) in January 2026 to prepare for the IPO. It is now officially known as Kenya Pipeline Company PLC.
The privatisation process was carried out under the Privatisation Act 2025 and capital market laws, giving the move a legal backing.
With this new status, KPC will no longer be governed under the same public finance rules that apply to fully state-owned corporations. This is expected to change how the company is managed and how decisions are made in future.
The move comes at a time when Kenya continues to face high fuel prices, with concerns over global supply disruptions and tensions in the Middle East.
Some analysts and critics have also raised questions on whether changes in ownership of such a strategic company could affect fuel prices and supply in the country going forward.
