“KSh 1000 Is Not Enough” – KMTC Student Speaks on Campus Struggles

A student from the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has sparked debate online after sharing a message to parents about the struggles many university girls are going through.

In a video shared online, the young woman asked parents to be more supportive, especially financially, saying that some students are forced into difficult situations just to survive in school.

“KSh 1000 Is Not Enough,” Says Student

According to the KMTC student, some parents give their children as little as KSh 1000 and expect it to last for the entire semester. She argued that this amount is too little to cover basic needs like food, transport, and personal items.

Because of this, she claimed that some female students end up dating much older men who provide them with money. She warned that these relationships often come with stress and emotional struggles.

“If you knew what some girls go through, you would not be proud. Many are suffering but have no choice because they need to survive,” she said.

She urged parents to check on their daughters regularly and offer support where possible, adding that many students feel neglected and overwhelmed.

Mixed Reactions from Kenyans

The video quickly attracted different opinions from Kenyans online. While some agreed with her message, others felt that students should learn to survive within their means.

Some people shared their own campus experiences, explaining how they managed without much financial support.

One man said he started selling sweets in shops and made about KSh 300 a day after being cut off financially by his family.

Another user noted that some students try to live beyond their means by copying wealthy friends, which puts pressure on both them and their parents.

“We Hustled and Survived”

Many Kenyans said that side hustles helped them survive campus life. Some mentioned selling snacks like boiled eggs and smokies, while others took small jobs to earn money.

Others defended parents, saying they are already struggling to pay fees, rent, and other expenses.

One comment read:

“If your school fees, rent, and food are already paid, then KSh 1000 can be enough. We should appreciate what our parents do.”
