The Embassy of Burundi in Kenya has raised concerns over reports of alleged harassment, mistreatment and deportation of Burundian nationals living in Kenya.
In a statement, the embassy appealed to Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who chairs the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State Summit, to urgently call a regional meeting to address the concerns.
The embassy said it wants the matter discussed at the regional level as concerns continue over the treatment of Burundian citizens in Kenya.
Free travel documents for Burundians returning home
The embassy has also announced a new arrangement for Burundian nationals who want to return to Burundi.
According to a notice dated September 5, the embassy will issue Laissé-Passer travel documents free of charge to Burundian citizens who need the documents to travel back home.
The service will start on September 7 at the Burundi Embassy offices in Kilimani, Nairobi.
Burundian nationals seeking the travel documents can visit the embassy between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
The arrangement is intended to make it easier for Burundian nationals who wish to return home to complete the necessary travel documentation.
