Morocco begin AFCON 2025 journey against Comoros in Rabat opener

The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 officially gets underway on Sunday night as host nation Morocco face Comoros in the opening match at the Complexe Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.

All eyes will be on the hosts as they launch their campaign in front of a passionate home crowd. With the tournament being played on Moroccan soil, expectations are high, and the Atlas Lions are under pressure to start strongly.

Hosts ready despite fitness concerns

Morocco have spent weeks preparing for the tournament, focusing on both physical condition and tactical organisation. Head coach Walid Regragui and his technical team have had to carefully manage a few fitness issues within the squad.

Key players including Achraf Hakimi, Hamza Igamane, and Sofyan Amrabat have faced injury or fitness concerns, forcing the coaching staff to make late decisions as the opening match approaches. Despite this, confidence remains high within the camp.

Comoros arrive with belief, not pressure

Comoros head into the tournament with less attention but plenty of motivation. Coach Stefano Cusin has used limited preparation time to build unity and discipline within his team. Although they are considered underdogs, the Coelacanths are eager to prove they can compete at Africa’s top level.

Midfielder Youssouf M’Changama highlighted the importance of the moment, saying the opening match is a proud occasion for Comorian football and a chance to continue improving their reputation on the continental stage.

Coaches speak ahead of kick-off

Regragui emphasized the importance of mentality and calmness in the opening game, reminding fans that preparation has been ongoing for over two years.

He also played down speculation around Hakimi’s availability, insisting that every match in the tournament requires balance, humility, and emotional control.

On the opposite bench, Cusin praised Morocco’s quality but maintained that his team is focused on finding the right balance between defence and attack to remain competitive.
