Moses Kuria Joins UDA, Attends State House Meeting Ahead of Gatundu South Race

Former Cabinet Secretary and Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) party leader Moses Kuria has returned to the political spotlight after attending a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aspirants’ meeting at State House, shortly after announcing his intention to contest the Gatundu South parliamentary seat.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, brought together UDA aspirants from across the country. It highlighted President William Ruto’s growing influence within the party as early preparations for future nominations and succession politics began to take shape.

Kuria’s presence at the gathering attracted attention, coming just days after he officially registered as a UDA aspirant for Gatundu South — a constituency he once represented before losing the seat in the 2017 general election.

Official Registration Sparks Debate

On Sunday, February 1, 2026, Kuria confirmed his move by sharing proof of his registration on social media after paying the required KSh5,000 nomination fee. The announcement quickly sparked political debate, especially considering his role as the founder and leader of the Chama Cha Kazi party, which has continued to field candidates independently in recent elections, including the Mbeere North by-election in November 2025.

“I have registered as an aspirant to contest the Gatundu South MP seat on the UDA ticket,” Kuria said.

Shift from Nairobi Ambitions

Kuria’s decision to focus on Gatundu South marks a shift from his earlier interest in running for the Nairobi governorship. He explained that operating a smaller party had made his political journey difficult, prompting him to seek a stronger platform within UDA.

He noted that his party struggled to gain traction and that he had often been labelled a political ally of President Ruto, which influenced his decision to align himself with the ruling party.
