Police Explain Events Leading to Shooting of KMTC Student in Huruma

The National Police Service (NPS) has urged residents of Huruma Estate in Nairobi to remain calm after violent clashes that resulted in the death of a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student and the burning of two vehicles.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga explained that the unrest began following a robbery report made at Huruma Police Station on the morning of Saturday, February 7.

According to police, a complainant reported that five young men, known to him, had attacked and robbed him of Ksh1,800 and a silver chain. The victim also claimed that the suspects threatened to kill him during the incident.

Acting on the report, police officers moved to the area and arrested two suspects in the morning hours. Later that evening, at around 7:30 p.m., officers arrested two more suspects as investigations continued.

However, during the second arrest, one suspect allegedly raised an alarm, attracting a group of youths who began pelting police officers with stones and other objects in an attempt to disrupt the operation.

To control the situation, police officers reportedly fired shots into the air to disperse the hostile crowd. Soon after, authorities received reports that a female KMTC student had been fatally injured during the confrontation.

News of the student’s death sparked outrage among residents of Huruma Estate, leading to violent protests in which two vehicles were set on fire. The unrest continued into Sunday, February 8, 2026.
