Reason Ida Odinga Avoids Being Called Mrs Odinga

Ida Odinga has continued to attract public attention in recent months, especially following the death of her husband, Raila Odinga. From overseeing burial arrangements to receiving mourners on behalf of the family, and after her recent appointment as an ambassador by the government of William Ruto, Ida has remained firmly in the spotlight.

Despite her high profile, one thing about her has consistently stood out — she prefers not to be addressed as “Mrs Odinga.”

Why She Rejects the Title

According to Dennis Onyango, Raila Odinga’s longtime personal assistant and head of his secretariat, Ida has deliberately avoided the title for years.

Speaking during a past interview on the KMB Podcast in October 2025, Onyango recounted an early encounter that revealed Ida’s firm position on the matter.

At the time, Onyango was still working as a journalist and attempted to reach Raila through a telephone booth. Although he already knew Ida personally, he formally introduced himself and asked whether he was speaking to “Mrs Odinga.”

Her response was immediate and clear.

“Just Call Me Ida”

Onyango revealed that Ida politely but firmly corrected him, saying she preferred to be called simply “Ida” rather than “Mrs Odinga.”

While she fully acknowledged her role as Raila’s wife, she stressed the importance of maintaining her personal identity. According to Onyango, Ida believes the Odinga name carries enormous historical and political weight.

The name is closely linked to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President, and later to Raila Odinga, one of the country’s most influential political figures.

Because of this legacy, Ida felt that adopting the title “Mrs. Odinga” would overshadow her individuality.

Protecting Her Own Identity

Onyango explained that Ida’s stance reflects a conscious decision to stand as her own person rather than be defined solely by her husband’s political prominence.

In her view, using her personal name allows her to honor her position within the family while still preserving her independence and identity.

Raila’s Final Days

During the same interview, Onyango also shared insights into Raila Odinga’s final period. He claimed the veteran opposition leader appeared aware that his time was coming to an end before his death on October 15, 2025.

According to Onyango, Raila’s words and actions suggested he was gradually winding down his affairs. He added that he was among the close aides who advised the ODM leader to take time off and rest away from the public eye.
