President William Ruto has spoken following the death of gospel singer Rachel Wandeto, who passed away days after she was allegedly attacked and set on fire by unknown people in Mwiki.
In a statement released after news of her death emerged, the president sent his condolences to Wandeto’s family and promised that those behind the attack would face the law.
Ruto said the government would not spare any suspect connected to the incident, regardless of political connections or status.
“May God give the family and friends of Ms Rachel Wandeto strength, peace and comfort during this difficult time,” the president said.
He added that the criminals involved in the attack would be arrested and held responsible for their actions.
Reports indicate that Wandeto died nearly three days after she was reportedly sprayed with petrol and set ablaze by attackers who are still being pursued by police.
Friends and fellow gospel musicians earlier revealed that the singer had suffered serious burns covering about 70 percent of her body. Kenyans had also been urged to donate blood as she fought for her life in hospital.
Hours before her death on Sunday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited the singer in hospital and assured the public that investigations into the shocking attack were ongoing.
Rachel Wandeto was widely known online because of her strong political views and support for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Murkomen stated that if the attack was linked to political differences, then it would raise serious concerns about the country’s safety and political tolerance.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also confirmed that detectives had already begun investigating the incident.
According to Kanja, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were directed to speed up investigations and identify everyone involved in the attack.
“The investigations have commenced. The DCI have been directed to move with speed to establish what happened so that all those involved face the law,” Kanja stated.
