Ruto says Nairobi–Nakuru highway traffic jams will soon be history
President William Ruto has assured Kenyans that traffic congestion on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway will be a thing of the past after 2025.
Speaking on Monday, December 22, 2025, during the Kimalel Goat Auction in Baringo, the President said the government has already started long-term solutions to permanently fix the frequent gridlock along the busy road.
Ruto even encouraged motorists to take photos of the current traffic jams, saying they would soon become historical memories once the road upgrades are completed—especially along the Rironi–Mau Summit section.
Major Road Expansion Underway
The President revealed that the government has launched a major expansion project on the highway. According to him:
-
The road will be expanded to eight lanes from Rironi to Mai Mahiu
-
It will then be reduced to six lanes from Naivasha to Nakuru
He said the project is fully planned and aimed at improving traffic flow for both private motorists and commercial transport.
New Roads to Boost Western Kenya Transport
Ruto also confirmed that funds have already been set aside for feasibility studies on new connecting highways. These include:
-
A new route branching from the Nakuru–Eldoret road near Total toward Kericho and Kisumu
-
Another route from Mau Summit linking Eldoret, Malaba border, and Kisumu
According to the President, these roads will help open up western Kenya and reduce pressure on the Nairobi–Nakuru corridor.
