Senator Maina Raises Alarm Over Construction in Karura Forest

Nominated Senator Veronica Maina has raised serious concerns over ongoing construction activities inside Karura Forest, calling for urgent action to protect the iconic green space.

Speaking at Parliament on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the senator revealed that heavy machinery has reportedly been moved into the forest. She said parts of the natural tree cover have already been cleared to allow the installation of container-like housing units for National Youth Service (NYS) personnel.

Construction Continues Despite Court Order

Maina questioned why construction appears to be ongoing despite a court order issued on March 25, 2026, which stopped all activities at the Rangers Village site.

The case was filed by Friends of Karura Community Forest Association and Green Belt Movement after the government announced plans to set up NYS barracks in the forest.

According to conservation groups, trees had already been cut down and land cleared using heavy machines before the court stepped in. The affected area was also reportedly closed off to both the public and the media.

Senator Maina warned that continued interference with Karura Forest could have serious environmental consequences.

She described the forest as an important green space in Nairobi and a key symbol of conservation linked to the legacy of Wangari Maathai.

According to her, any destruction of the forest threatens biodiversity, disrupts the ecosystem, and could negatively affect the environment of the capital city.

“The continued presence of NYS personnel and construction materials raises serious concerns about whether the court order is being respected,” she said.

Senate Committee Asked to Investigate

The senator has now tasked the Senate Committee on Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources to investigate the matter.

She wants the committee to:

  • Confirm whether the Ministry of Environment has stopped the construction
  • Establish if the court order has been obeyed
  • Explain why activities are still ongoing at the site

Government Responds to Claims

The government had earlier defended the project, saying only about three acres of land would be used.

Officials explained that the space was meant for NYS housing and a large tree nursery project to support Nairobi’s greening efforts.

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) confirmed that NYS facilities were indeed being developed within the forest.

However, Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa dismissed claims that the forest was being cleared for private housing.

She stated in a recent interview that the goal is to grow between two million and ten million tree seedlings to improve forest cover in the city.

Public Concern Growing

The developments have sparked public debate, with environmental groups and Kenyans raising concerns about transparency, conservation, and respect for the rule of law.

As investigations continue, all eyes are now on the government and Senate to ensure Karura Forest is protected for future generations.
