St. George’s Parents Protest Alleged Inappropriate Searches During Drug Screening

Parents of learners at St. George’s Girls Senior School in Nairobi have complained about what they describe as inappropriate body searches carried out during a drug screening exercise before the school closed on June 5.
Several parents claim that some students were subjected to invasive searches by a female police officer. They allege that the officer touched the girls’ private parts during the exercise without the consent of their parents.
According to the parents, the incident has left many learners upset and traumatised, especially candidates preparing for their national examinations.
The school’s Chief Principal, Assumpta Mwangi, had earlier apologised to parents, saying the security checks were introduced following concerns that arose after the fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Senior School.
In a later statement, the school said the security screening programme would continue but would be conducted under clear guidelines aimed at protecting learners. The administration also said no specific case of misconduct had been confirmed.
Kilimani Sub-County Police Commander Patricia Yegon confirmed that the officer involved is attached to the National Police Service’s K9 unit, which had been invited by the school to carry out the searches.
She said the allegations have been officially reported and investigations are ongoing.
Although parents support efforts to stop drugs from entering schools, they insist that any search should respect the dignity and rights of learners. They have called for action if investigations confirm any misconduct.
