UoN’s return to the top signals progress for Kenya’s public universities, but global competitiveness will depend on closing gaps in science, technology, law, and humanities research in the coming years.
Kenya’s higher education sector has received fresh global recognition after the University of Nairobi emerged as the country’s top-ranked institution in the World University Rankings by Subject 2026, released by Times Higher Education.
The latest rankings show the University of Nairobi reclaiming its leading position nationally after outperforming Kenyatta University in four key academic disciplines.
The assessment covered universities across 11 major subject areas worldwide, using a detailed and data-driven evaluation model.

- Staff-to-student ratios
- industry income and external research funding
- Patents, innovation, and knowledge transfer
- International outlook and collaborations
Each subject applies different weightings to reflect distinct academic cultures and research practices.
What This Means for Kenyan Universities
The 2026 rankings underline the University of Nairobi’s growing dominance in research-led disciplines while confirming Kenyatta University’s strength in Life Sciences.
At the same time, the absence of Kenyan institutions in several global subject rankings points to the need for stronger funding, research infrastructure, and international partnerships.
