Wetang’ula Responds After Online Death Claims

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangu’la has publicly dismissed claims circulating online that he had died, assuring Kenyans that he is alive and actively carrying out his official duties.

The Speaker addressed the rumours by sharing a short video message, which he recorded while on duty in Naivasha. In the clip, Wetangu’la appeared calm and healthy, directly shutting down the false reports that had caused concern among sections of the public.

“Still alive, still kicking, still on duty,” he said, adding that he was fully engaged in parliamentary work.

Wetangu’la Recently Returned from India

Before the rumours emerged, Wetangu’la had been out of the country attending the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) in New Delhi, India.

During the visit, he held talks with several senior Indian leaders, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Deputy Rajya Sabha Chairman Shri Harivansh, Secretary General of the House of the People Shri Utpal Kumar Singh, and MP Shashi Tharoor.

According to Wetangu’la, the discussions focused on strengthening Kenya–India relations, which he said are built on a long shared history. The two sides also explored ways of enhancing cooperation between the Kenyan and Indian parliaments through parliamentary friendship groups.

He further proposed the revival of training programmes for parliamentary staff, especially in legislative drafting, which were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kenyans React to the Video

Many Kenyans expressed relief after the Speaker addressed the rumours, with some offering prayers and well wishes.

One user thanked him for clearing the air, saying no one deserves to be wished dead. Others urged him to continue updating the public regularly, while several messages wished him long life and good health.

However, a few commenters questioned the timing of the video, suggesting it could have been recorded earlier, even as they wished him well.

Update on MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi’s Health

While in India, Wetangu’la also visited Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi, who is currently undergoing treatment in Kerala.

The Speaker revealed that the legislator was responding positively to treatment and rehabilitation under close medical care. He noted that many Kenyans seek specialised treatment in Kerala and said he plans to engage parliamentary committees to explore partnerships that could help improve Kenya’s healthcare system.

According to Wetangu’la, these partnerships would focus on specialist training, skills transfer, medical research, and structured referral systems.
