Police in Nairobi have started investigations into the death of a 22-year-old woman who reportedly fell from the sixth floor of an apartment building in Kileleshwa.
The woman has been identified as Consolata Githinji. Reports indicate that she fell from apartment C601, which is located in a short-stay accommodation building within the estate.
Police have already arrested a 33-year-old man who was reportedly with her at the time of the incident as investigations continue.
According to CCTV footage reviewed by investigators, the final movements of the young woman were captured in the early morning hours.
The footage shows a night guard standing near the lift area at around 4:11am. A few minutes later, at around 4:17am, Consolata arrived at the building together with a man who was later identified as Tonny Odhiambo.
The video further shows the woman appearing to reach out to the guard before he walked away. At about 4:18am, the guard helped the two open a key box before they entered apartment C601.
Moments later, at around 4:32am, CCTV footage reportedly captured shadows at the door, raising suspicion that there may have been some form of commotion inside the room.
At 4:34am, the guard was seen entering the apartment before coming out at 4:43am. He remained outside for a short time and later returned briefly at 4:46am.
This was reportedly the last time Consolata was seen alive.
What happened after that remains unclear, and police are now working to establish how the woman ended up on the ground floor.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrived at the scene at around 6:09am and began collecting evidence, including photographs from the scene.
Speaking during the investigation, the suspect claimed that the woman had been standing near a bedroom window and that he was unable to stop her from falling. He also alleged that she had earlier spoken about having suicidal thoughts.
Investigators also established that the apartment had not been booked using the suspect’s name, but rather under the name of one of his friends.
Further records show that between 5:56pm and 3:57am, three people — two women and one man — had checked into the same room.
Police are now expected to identify these individuals and determine whether they had any connection to the events that led to the woman’s death.
Residents and security officials within the estate have called for tighter rules to control the operations of short-stay apartments, saying the area has witnessed similar incidents in the past.
The family of the deceased is now demanding answers as detectives continue to investigate whether the death was a suicide or if there is more to the incident.
