456 Bags of Human Remains Found Near 2026 FIFA World Cup Venue in Mexico

Authorities and civilian search groups in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, Mexico, have discovered 456 bags containing human remains in clandestine graves close to Estadio Akron, a confirmed venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. These graves were found over several years, from 2022 to late 2025, rather than in a single operation.

The largest recovery occurred at Las Agujas in 2025, while other sites include Arroyo Hondo, Nextipac, and Lomas del Refugio. Many of the graves were on abandoned or semi-rural land, often chosen due to limited oversight.

Civilian search collectives, such as Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco, led much of the effort. These groups, often families of missing persons, operate with minimal resources due to slow official investigations, limited forensic capacity, and ongoing impunity.

Jalisco, one of Mexico’s most violent states, is a stronghold of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Victims are often killed during cartel disputes, targeted as perceived enemies, or lured with false job offers. Bodies are frequently dismembered and bagged to complicate identification.

Authorities have not confirmed the exact number of victims, as one person’s remains may appear in multiple bags, and a single bag may contain fragments from multiple victims. Partial forensic analysis has reconstructed dozens of victims, but many bags remain unprocessed.

The discoveries are part of Mexico’s wider crisis of disappearances, with over 130,000 people reported missing nationwide since 2006. Jalisco alone has recorded over 15,000 cases.

The proximity to the World Cup stadium has drawn international attention, with social media reactions coining the term “ghost games.” Activists urge FIFA to address human rights concerns and ensure the tournament does not overshadow local suffering.
