Trump Launches Plan to Replace Foreign Truck Drivers With U.S. Veterans

Kenyans working as truck drivers in the United States could be affected after the U.S. government announced a new plan to give more trucking jobs to American military veterans.

President Donald Trump unveiled the Freedom Hauliers Initiative, a programme aimed at helping former military personnel join the trucking industry more quickly.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said the plan is meant to create more job opportunities for veterans while improving safety on American roads.

Under the new programme, military veterans with experience driving heavy vehicles during their service will be allowed to skip some of the requirements needed to obtain a Commercial Driver’s Licence (CDL). Those without military driving experience will also receive accelerated training to help them qualify for trucking jobs within a shorter period.

The U.S. government also announced stricter checks on commercial truck drivers. Authorities will increase enforcement against drivers who fail English-language requirements or are found to have obtained licences illegally.

The changes may have an impact on some Kenyans working in the U.S. trucking industry. Although many Kenyans in America work in different sectors, a number are employed as commercial truck drivers and could be affected by the new employment policies.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the Trump administration has already removed more than 24,000 foreign commercial drivers from American roads.

The U.S. president said the new measures are intended to improve highway safety and ensure more trucking jobs are available to American citizens, especially military veterans.

The latest announcement is part of the Trump administration’s broader immigration and employment policies, which focus on strengthening immigration enforcement and giving priority to American workers.
