Muhoozi Kainerugaba Announces Bid to Succeed Museveni in 2031

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is set to seek the presidency in the 2031 elections.

The announcement was made by David Kabanda, an aide to Muhoozi and Head of the Chairman’s Office of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).

Speaking during a PLU meeting on Tuesday, September 1, Kabanda said Muhoozi had sent him to officially communicate his decision to contest for the country’s top political seat.

Kabanda also claimed that President Yoweri Museveni had approved Muhoozi’s decision to run for president.

According to him, the PLU will begin preparations to support Muhoozi’s presidential bid across Uganda’s 146 districts.

The group plans to organise endorsement rallies and collect the signatures required for his presidential campaign.

Muhoozi’s political ambitions

Muhoozi’s planned presidential bid has attracted attention because he is the son of President Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986.

The general has in recent years become increasingly active in Uganda’s political affairs while serving as the country’s military chief.

His interest in the presidency had already been widely discussed before the latest announcement, with Muhoozi previously hinting that he could seek the country’s top office in 2031.

Museveni, who secured another term in the January 2026 election, has also previously spoken about the possibility of supporting political leaders who could take over after his presidency.

Muhoozi’s expected 2031 campaign could therefore become one of the major political stories in Uganda in the coming years.
