Gates Foundation Clarifies on the Claims of Releasing a Lab-Grown Mosquito in Kenya

The Gates Foundation has refuted recent social media reports claiming that it released lab-grown mosquitoes in Kenya.

In an official statement issued on February 9, the foundation clarified that it does not release mosquitoes, operate laboratories producing them, or carry out any vector-control activities in Nairobi or elsewhere in the country.

“The Gates Foundation does not release mosquitoes, operate laboratories that do so, or run vector-control activities in Nairobi or anywhere else,” the statement emphasized.

The organization further explained that malaria prevention and control in Kenya are fully managed by national authorities and local institutions under existing laws and regulatory oversight. The foundation supports these efforts by collaborating openly with governments, researchers, and public health partners to advance Kenyan-led priorities in a responsible manner.

“Our work in Kenya is focused on strengthening public health programs in partnership with local authorities, researchers, and communities,” the foundation added.

They reiterated, “We do not conduct mosquito releases nor operate laboratories for that purpose.”
