Police Hunting Man Accused of Hiring Goons to Force Landlord to Refund Deposit

Police in Kakamega County are hunting for a man accused of hiring goons to intimidate his former landlord over a rental deposit dispute.

The suspect, identified as Boniface Mukhaisi, reportedly moved out of a rental house in the Rosterman area of Lurambi Sub-County in early January 2026. After vacating the house, he allegedly tried to recover his KSh4,500 rental deposit but failed to reach an agreement with the landlord.

According to witnesses, Mukhaisi had earlier warned the landlord, in front of other tenants at the “face-me” plot, that he would not allow his hard-earned money to be lost.

On Saturday night at around 11 p.m., the landlord was drinking at a local bar when three men approached him and persuaded him to step outside. The men then dragged him to a dark area behind the bar and threatened him to immediately transfer the full deposit to Mukhaisi’s phone number or face serious consequences.

Fearing for his safety, the landlord complied and sent the KSh4,500 to the suspected phone number. The attackers allegedly slapped him and ordered him to stop drinking and go home.

The men also took his coat, hat, and shoes, which were later found abandoned at the bar. However, they did not take his mobile phone or other valuables.

The landlord told police that the attackers claimed they had been sent specifically to recover the rental deposit. He also alleged that Mukhaisi had been a troublesome tenant, accusing him of drug abuse and damaging the house by scribbling on the walls. According to the landlord, he withheld the deposit to cover repair costs.

The incident has since been reported to the authorities, who have launched investigations and intensified the search for Mukhaisi and his alleged accomplices.
