ODM Starts Process to Remove Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has officially started the process of removing Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General.

In a letter dated Thursday, April 2, ODM asked Sifuna to appear before its disciplinary committee on April 8. He is expected to answer several allegations raised against him by the party leadership.

The letter was signed by ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga. It accuses Sifuna of going against the party’s official position, especially on key political matters. One of the main issues mentioned is his strong opposition to a pre-election agreement between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a party linked to President William Ruto.

According to the party, Sifuna has been making public statements that contradict ODM’s decisions, even after taking part in internal discussions. The letter says this has caused confusion and weakened unity within the party.

ODM also claims that his actions have affected the party’s image and discipline. The letter states that his conduct goes against the party’s constitution and his responsibilities as a senior official.

In addition, Sifuna has been accused of failing to attend important party meetings. This includes a Central Committee meeting held in February, where a decision was made to remove him from the Secretary General position.

The party has also raised concerns about his involvement in the “Linda Mwananchi” movement. ODM says this group was formed without official approval and operates outside the party’s structure.

Sifuna has been warned that if he does not respond to the allegations within the given time, the disciplinary committee will make a decision without his input.

This development comes shortly after a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal. The tribunal dismissed Sifuna’s case, where he had challenged his removal as Secretary General.

Instead, the tribunal directed both Sifuna and ODM to resolve their disagreements internally through the party’s dispute resolution system. It encouraged both sides to handle the matter in good faith.

ODM has recently been facing internal disagreements, especially after Sifuna’s removal. Two main groups have emerged within the party. One group, linked to Sifuna, is associated with the “Linda Mwananchi” movement, while another faction known as “Linda Ground” is seen as closer to the government.

During a special delegates conference held on March 27, ODM made several leadership changes. Oburu Odinga was elected as the party leader. Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Nassir were named as deputy party leaders.

At the same time, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi was removed from his position as deputy party leader. He is believed to be part of the faction supporting Sifuna.
