DJ Afro Set for Vurugu Fight Night Commentary in Majembe vs Mbavu Destroyer Clash

Kenya’s famous movie narrator, DJ Afro, is set to entertain fans in a new way after being selected as the live commentator for an upcoming boxing match.

The popular voice behind many action movies will headline the much-awaited fight between Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer. This will be the first time DJ Afro is doing live commentary in a boxing event.

The event, known as Vurugu Fight Night, will take place this Saturday, April 4, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi. The venue is expected to host thousands of fans, with more than 2,000 tickets already available for the exciting match.

The announcement was made by comedian Oga Obina, who is one of the main organisers of the event. He shared the update through his Instagram page on April 2.

DJ Afro, whose real name is James Mwangi, is also known by other names such as James Muigai and DJ Amingos. He is widely known in Kenya and Tanzania for his unique style of narrating movies.

He became famous for translating and dubbing foreign films, especially action, kung-fu, and Indian movies, into local languages like Swahili, Sheng, and Kikuyu. His creative storytelling made these films more enjoyable and relatable to local audiences.

What made DJ Afro stand out is that he did more than just translate. He added Kenyan humour, slang, and creativity, often changing storylines to make them funnier and easier to understand. His famous phrases, such as “Pozi tena pozi kabisa,” became very popular among fans.

Before online streaming became common, many young people in Kenya watched movies through VCDs. DJ Afro’s narrations were a big part of that experience, especially in local video halls where fans gathered to enjoy his entertaining voice.

Apart from DJ Afro’s involvement, the boxing match has also attracted attention from top leaders and business figures in the country.

President William Ruto has pledged Ksh1 million to each boxer, giving a total of Ksh2 million in support. The donation was delivered through Lang’ata MP Jalang’o, and the President made it clear that he supports both fighters.

Businessman Oketch Salah, who is linked to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, also contributed Ksh200,000. In addition, Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri pledged Ksh2 million to support the event.

Several companies have also shown interest in sponsoring the fight. One major sponsor has even offered a brand-new Toyota Noah as the main prize for the winner.

With DJ Afro as the live commentator, strong support from leaders, and big sponsorship deals, the Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer fight is expected to be one of the most exciting events in Kenya this year.
