Ruto and Gachagua Meet Face-to-Face at Ol Kalou MP’s Requiem Mass

President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua met in public on Wednesday during a requiem mass held for the late Ol Kalou MP, David Kiaraho.

The event brought together leaders, residents, and supporters from different political sides. Although it was a time to mourn, there was also clear political tension as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Rigathi Gachagua arrived at the ceremony with several leaders from his camp, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu.

Earlier, while speaking in Nairobi, Gachagua had urged residents of Nyandarua to remain calm and respectful during the funeral. He reminded his supporters that the occasion was meant to honour the late MP and should not turn into a political confrontation.

He said that President Ruto, as the head of state, deserves respect if he attends the event, and warned against any form of heckling.

Gachagua also spoke about political differences, saying they should be settled through voting and not during funerals.

He questioned why the burial of another MP, Johana Ng’eno, was conducted quickly, while Kiaraho’s burial took longer. Despite his criticism, he insisted that funerals should remain peaceful and dignified.

At the same time, Gachagua criticised the government for failing to deliver on key promises such as roads and electricity. He told residents that they will have the chance to express their dissatisfaction during elections.

The requiem mass turned into more than just a mourning event, as it also reflected the current political mood in the country. Gachagua made it clear that he would attend the ceremony despite pressure from some leaders who wanted him to stay away because of President Ruto’s presence.

Political Battle in Mt Kenya Region

Gachagua is currently working hard to strengthen his influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.

He has been using both strong political messages and reconciliation efforts to win support. While he has criticised some leaders, he has also reached out to others in an effort to unite the region.

Recently, he has warned voters against supporting leaders he accuses of betraying the community, urging residents to vote them out.

At the same time, he has promoted unity by encouraging leaders to work together under his “gather all, scatter none” approach.
