The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has proposed new compensation packages for Kenyans who suffered losses during recent protests, including those affected by the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.
According to the proposed 2026 reparations guidelines, people whose businesses, homes, or other properties were damaged or looted during the protests may receive at least Ksh 100,000, depending on the value of the loss.
The commission said the compensation plan also covers people who were injured, unlawfully arrested, abducted, or lost loved ones during the demonstrations.
Families of those who died during the protests are set to receive a minimum of Ksh 3 million, in addition to funeral and medical expenses. They may also receive a public apology from the relevant authorities.
Victims of sexual and gender-based violence during the protests are proposed to receive Ksh 4 million, together with medical support and counselling services under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
For people who suffered severe injuries such as bullet wounds or amputations, KNCHR has recommended compensation of Ksh 1 million, plus medical expenses and disability support.
Those who suffered moderate injuries like fractures and dislocations may get Ksh 500,000, while people with minor injuries are expected to receive at least Ksh 100,000.
Victims who suffered psychological trauma are also included in the compensation plan and may receive Ksh 250,000 together with counselling and mental health support.
The commission noted that people affected by the protests in 2017, 2024, and 2025 can submit their claims for consideration.
KNCHR has asked the public to send their views and memoranda on the proposed guidelines before April 27, 2026.
The government has already set aside Ksh 2 billion in the supplementary budget for the 2025/2026 financial year to compensate victims of demonstrations and police brutality.
People who are not satisfied with the decision made on their claims will be allowed to apply for a review, especially if they have new evidence that was not submitted earlier.
