A student from Utumishi Girls Academy has shared a painful account of how students struggled to escape during the deadly dormitory fire that broke out at the school.
The student said the fire started at around midnight, causing fear and confusion among the girls inside the dormitory. According to her, one of the doors was not opened in time, making it difficult for many students to escape safely.
The survivor, who broke her leg while trying to save herself, said some students from the upper section of the dormitory were forced to jump from the building to avoid the flames and heavy smoke.
A parent who spoke outside the school also said she arrived at the school early in the morning after receiving a call from a relative. She explained that her aunt’s daughter survived the fire and narrated the terrifying moments inside the dormitory.

The parent claimed that although the dormitory door was later opened, students were not properly guided on how to leave the building safely. This caused panic among the learners as they rushed to escape.
Several students reportedly suffered injuries, including broken legs, after jumping from the upper floor during the incident. Others screamed for help as smoke spread inside the dormitory.
The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns among parents and Kenyans over safety measures in boarding schools. Many people online are now questioning whether schools are well prepared to handle emergencies such as fires.
Police have confirmed that at least 16 students died in the tragic fire while many others are still receiving treatment in hospital due to injuries.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire and whether there was negligence during the emergency response.
