Embu County on High Alert Following Confirmation of Mpox Virus

Residents of Embu County have been asked to stay alert while remaining calm after health authorities confirmed the county’s first case of Mpox.

According to a statement released on Saturday by Embu County Executive Committee Member for Health Jamal Runyenje, laboratory tests conducted on May 30, 2026, confirmed that a 29-year-old woman from Kagaari North Ward in Runyenjes Sub-County had tested positive for the viral disease.

Following the confirmation, county health officials quickly put in place emergency response measures aimed at preventing the disease from spreading to more people.

The Department of Health has already started investigating the case and tracing individuals who may have come into contact with the patient. Other measures include increased disease surveillance, public awareness campaigns, infection prevention efforts, and community education programs being carried out together with the Ministry of Health.

Health experts explained that Mpox is a viral illness that spreads through close contact with an infected person, contaminated objects, body fluids, respiratory droplets during prolonged contact, or infected animals.

Some of the common symptoms of Mpox include fever, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, body pains, tiredness, and skin rashes or lesions.

Runyenje said all health facilities across Embu County have been placed on high alert and are prepared to identify, isolate, and manage any suspected cases as quickly as possible.

He also urged residents to follow recommended health guidelines such as washing hands regularly, avoiding close contact with people showing symptoms, not sharing personal items, and cooperating with public health officers carrying out investigations and contact tracing.

Members of the public who develop symptoms such as fever, unusual skin rashes, skin lesions, or swollen lymph nodes have been advised to seek medical attention immediately at the nearest health facility.

The county government assured residents that it remains committed to protecting public health and will continue providing updates as investigations and response activities continue.

Authorities have also encouraged residents to rely on information from official government communication channels to avoid misinformation.

Health officials stressed that early reporting of symptoms and timely medical treatment are important in helping stop the spread of the disease.
