Popular Luo Ohangla dancer and social media personality MC Adek Tatu has been arrested in Mombasa County by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over a controversial Facebook post linked to the deadly fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil.
According to the DCI, the suspect, whose real name is David Onyango Elgon, was taken into custody after sharing content on his Facebook page that allegedly sparked public anger and raised concerns about hate speech and incitement.
The post emerged shortly after a devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Academy claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens of others injured. The tragedy shocked Kenyans across the country, with leaders, parents, and members of the public mourning the loss of the young learners.
Reports indicate that the controversial post appeared to celebrate the deaths and contained remarks targeting a specific community. The content quickly spread on social media, attracting widespread criticism from Kenyans who condemned the message as insensitive and divisive.
Many leaders and social media users called on the National Police Service (NPS), the DCI, and other relevant agencies to investigate the matter and take legal action against those responsible for spreading inflammatory content online.

Among those who condemned the remarks was Nakuru-based police officer Sammy Ondimu, who warned that tribal incitement could threaten national unity. He urged Kenyans to use social media responsibly, especially during periods of national mourning.
As public pressure increased, MC Adek Tatu later denied responsibility for the controversial posts. In a statement shared online, he claimed that his Facebook account had been hacked and that the messages were published without his knowledge.
He stated that the views expressed in the posts did not reflect his personal beliefs and strongly condemned any form of tribal hatred or division. The entertainer also apologised to Kenyans who were offended by the content.
Adek further expressed sympathy to the families affected by the Utumishi Girls Academy fire tragedy and offered his condolences to those who lost their loved ones.
“I wish to offer my heartfelt condolences to all families that lost their children in the fire incident. May God give them strength during this difficult time,” he said.
The Ohangla entertainer, who commands a large following on social media, promised that such content would never appear on his platforms again.
Meanwhile, investigations into both the controversial posts and the cause of the deadly school fire are ongoing as authorities continue gathering evidence.
The arrest comes as the government intensifies efforts to curb hate speech, online incitement, and misuse of social media platforms across the country.
